  • F.A.Q.

    • What age can my children start?

We have programmes in place for children aged 3 and above starting with our Dragon Tot classes a Parent and Child Class developed to help a child learn core motor skills and awareness.  We have classes suited for all age groups and will be happy to discuss your requirements directly to help you select the best classes for you or your child.

    • Do I need any experience?

No none at all, our Instructors are trained to help even complete beginners start to learn Martial Arts and help them along the way.  All of our Instructors and Students were beginners too at some point so we all understand that it is not easy to start with and we can show you tips and tricks along the way to help make it easier and keep what you are doing fun.

    • What should I wear?

When you first start classes all we ask is that you wear something light and non-restrictive such as Jogging Trousers and a T-Shirt.  This means that you will be able to carry out the lessons just like everyone else.

When it comes to joining us, it will depend on the class, but you will get a uniform for your classes that you can wear which is designed for martial Arts to help you move freely and safely.

    • How do I pay for classes?

Classes are paid for using our Direct Debit service.  This is a completely free service that helps us to ensure that our Instructors are able to spend more time on the mats with our students and not collecting lesson fees.  This way you can rest assured that payments are received by the club, the same time each month with no hassle for you.  This goes along with our Non-Profit commitment that we maintain our fees as low as we can to ensure that we promote involvement for as many students as possible.

    • Are your Instuctors Qualified?

This is a fantastic question and we are pleased you asked.  Yes they certainly are.

Our Instructors must all follow the MASA 5 guidelines as to what all Instructors should hold.  Although we are not members of MASA directly (We are able to follow these guidelines without needing to be a member) we promote what the MASA (Martial Arts Standards Agency) stands for and will continue to promote their goal.  All KRMA Instructors must have:

      • A Full Certified and Valid Black Belt Minimum
      • An Instructor/Teaching Qualification
      • Full Instructor Insurance
      • Full Enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) Check
      • A Clear Pricing Policy with nothing hidden
    • How often can we grade for our Belts?

This will depend on how often you are training and whether you are ready to grade for your next belt.  We hold grading assessments every 3 months and students will receive an invite depending on a couple of key points:

      • How often have they trained (students should be training approximately twice a week where possible)
      • Are they ready? (can they perform the requirements of an assessment to the required ability we expect?)
      • Are they due to grade? (each belt has a minimum timescale of between 3 and 6 months minimum, this must be matched along with the training amount they have achieved)
      • Do they display the correct behaviour in classes to warrant an invite?

If a student is deemed ready for an assessment by their Instructor, they will then be issued with a grading invite.  This is not a guarantee of a pass, it clearly provides a student with the opportunity to attempt their next belt level test.

    • How long will it take to achieve my Black Belt?

How long is a piece of string?  The true answer is however long it takes you, some people are quicker than others, some slower, it is an individual journey and there is no race to Black Belt.  However, we do have timescales that we can use as a guideline, but these are by no means set in stone and may take longer.  It will take a minimum of 4 years to achieve your Black Belt at Koku-Ryu Martial Arts.

We are proud to have high standards and only those who truly work hard will achieve a Black Belt through us which they can positively say they earned.  Are you one of those people?  We hope so.
